Political Science Professor Weighs In On Election Results

SPEECH, HE THANKED HIS SUPPORTERS BUT ALSO NOTED THAT BETO O’ROURKE INSPIRED TEXAS. JENNIFER LINDGREN, CBS 11 NEWS. WE ARE JOINED BY A POLITICAL SCIENCE PROFESSOR. WE WANT TO START WITH THE SENATE RACE. MANY REPUBLICANS BELIEVE THAT BETO O’ROURKE MAY BE ABLE TO UNSEAT CRUZ. WHAT IS NEXT FOR HIM DO YOU THINK? THERE’S A COUPLE OF THINGS, FIRST OF ALL HE SAYS HE’S GOING BACK TO EL PASO AND HE WOULD TAKE A BREATHER FOR A LITTLE WHILE. BUT, OTHERS ARE SAYING THAT HE’S GOT ALL OF THIS MOMENTUM, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT HE CAN RUN AGAINST CORN AND IN 2020. THERE IS ALSO THE POSSIBILITY THAT HE MIGHT PUT IN A BID FOR THE PRESIDENTIAL BID FOR THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY. WHICH WOULD BE UNUSUAL FOR A CONGRESSMAN. HOWEVER, BETO O’ROURKE HAS DONE MANY THINGS THAT HAVE BEEN UNUSUAL. WE COULD POTENTIALLY SEE THAT, AS WELL. HISTORY WAS MADE IN ANOTHER RACE, ALL RED DEFEATED SESSIONS. WHAT DO YOU THINK WAS THE TIPPING POINT IN THAT RACE. DOES THIS SIGNAL THAT AT LEAST PARTS OF TEXAS ARE BECOMING MORE OF A BATTLEGROUND AREA? I THINK POTENTIALLY. THE TIPPING., I WOULD SAY. FIRST OF ALL I THINK LOOKING AT ALLRED’S STAR POWER , THE FACT HE IS MUCH YOUNGER, NEWER , AS COMPARED TO PETE SESSIONS WHO IS AN 11 TERM 63-YEAR-OLD CONGRESSMAN. HOWEVER, I THINK IT IS MORE IMPORTANT TO LOOK AT THE DEMOGRAPHICS OF THE DISTRICT, AND THE FACT THAT THOSE DEMOGRAPHICS HAVE BEEN SHIFTING , IT’S BEEN BECOMING A MUCH MORE DIVERSE DISTRICT OVERTIME. AND, THAT’S NOT SURPRISING GIVING THAT DISTRICT WAS REDISTRICTED , FOR THE REPUBLICANS, BACK IN 2003. WE ARE STARTING TO SEE A CORRECTION FOR THAT DISTRICT DEMOGRAPHICALLY. WERE GOING TO GO OUT LIVE TO CAPITOL HILL IN LESS THAN 10 MINUTES. WE WANT TO GET YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE NATIONAL RACES. WE HAVE A SPLIT IN CONGRESS NOW. MANY PEOPLE SAID IF THAT HAPPENED IT WOULD BE SEEN AS A REFERENDUM AGAINST PRESIDENT TRUMP. YOU THINK THAT IS THE CASE? I THINK MIDTERM ELECTIONS ALWAYS TEND TO BE A REFERENDUM EITHER FOR OR AGAINST THE SITTING PRESIDENT. I THINK YES, IT IS IN SOMEWAYS THE CASE. I DON’T THINK THAT IS RARE. I DON’T THINK THAT IS AN ANOMALY. I THINK THAT IS WHAT YOU TYPICALLY EXPECT TO SEE. IT SEEMS LIKE EVERY PRESIDENT’S FIRST TERM GOING BACK TO BILL CLINTON. RIGHT. THAT IS A COMMON THING. MIDTERM ELECTIONS ARE A CORRECTION FOR WHATEVER HAPPENED
