President Moon Jae-in has appointed former
Democratic Party chief Choo Mi-ae as his justice minister,… raising anticipation of a speedy
reform of the prosecution. The Blue House said Choo’s tenure began at
midnight,… and the president will give her the letter of appointment this afternoon. The position had been vacant for 80 days following
former minister Cho Kuk’s resignation. Choo, a five-term judge-turned-politician,
had gone through a parliamentary confirmation hearing in December, but the hearings report
wasn’t adopted over clashes between rival parties. The appointment comes despite this, as it
does not require parliamentary approval.
