INCLUDING REPORTS OF CONFRONTATIONS BETWEEN REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS.. AT LEAST ONE THAT GOT PHYSICAL. MEMPHIS LAWMAKER G.A HARDAWAY … AMONG THOSE LOCKED INSIDE THE HOUSE CHAMBERS. LOCAL 24 POLITICAL ANALYST OTIS SANFORD … EXPLAINS IN TONIGHT’S POINT OF VIEW. OTIS SANFORD/REPORTIN G: THE BEST THING I CAN SAY ABOUT THIS YEAR’S TENNESSEE LEGISLATIVE SESSION IS THAT IT’S FINALLY OVER. THE INGLORIOUS END CAME THURSDAY – WHICH ALSO EASILY RANKED AS THE MOST CONTENTIOUS, HEAVY-HANDED AND, FRANKLY, SHAMEFUL DAY SO FAR. WE WITNESSED THE REPUBLICAN SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE ORDERING THE DOORS OF THE HOUSE CHAMBER LOCKED TO PREVENT DEMOCRATS FROM WALKING OUT – DURING ONE OF THE RARE TIMES THAT THEY WERE NEEDED TO HAVE A QUORUM. THERE WERE ALSO REPORTS THAT DEMOCRATIC HOUSE MEMBER G. A. HARDAWAY OF MEMPHIS GOT INTO A PHYSICAL ALTERCATION WITH A SECURITY OFFICER. A FELLOW DEMOCRATIC LAWMAKER ACCUSED THE OFFICER OF ASSAULTING HARDAWAY. WHILE A REPUBLICAN MEMBER PROMISED TO LAUNCH AN ETHICS INVESTIGATION TO DETERMINE IF IT WAS HARDAWAY WHO ACTED IMPROPERLY. THE PARTISAN CHAOS STEMMED IN PART FROM THE FACT THAT HOUSE SPEAKER GLEN CASADA REFUSED TO NAME A SINGLE DEMOCRAT TO A CONFERENCE COMMITTEE WORKING OUT DIFFERENCES TO LEGISLATION FOR TENN CARE BLOCK GRANTS. AND OF COURSE, THERE WERE HEATED EXCHANGES OVER THE CONTROVERSIAL SCHOOL VOUCHER BILL – INCLUDING LANGUAGE PREVENTING SHELBY COUNTY AND METRO NASHVILLE SCHOOL SYSTEMS FROM SUING OVER THE VOUCHER LEGISLATION. AMID THE RANCOR, LAWMAKERS ALSO MADE IT EVEN EASIER FOR PEOPLE TO GET A FIREARMS PERMIT. IN ALL OF MY YEARS FOLLOWING THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, I HAVE SEEN PLENTY OF QUESTIONABLE LEGISLATION AND OUTLANDISH BEHAVIOR. THIS YEAR, WE HAVE WITNESSED A LEGISLATURE – AT ITS WORSE. AND THAT’S MY POINT OF VIEW. I’M OTIS SANFORD, FOR LOCAL 24 NEWS.
