Local 24 News political analyst & commentator Otis Sanford on the Plough Foundation

ONE OF THE BLUFF CITY’S LARGEST CHARITABLE FOUNDATIONS IS PLANNING TO CLOSE ITS DOORS.. THE PLOUGH FOUNDATION MADE THE ANNOUNCEMENT THIS WEEKEND.. LOCAL 24 POLITICAL ANALYST OTIS SANFORD LOOK BACK ON THE AMAZING CONTRIBUTION THE FOUNDATION HAD.. HERE’S HIS POINT OF VIEW. OTIS SANFORD/REPORTIN G For nearly 60 years, the Plough Foundation has been issuing monetary grants and making a noticeable difference throughout Memphis and Shelby County. No doubt every person in this community has been impacted in some way by the generous philanthropy of the foundation – which was established in 1960 by hugely successful businessman Abe Plough. But over the next four years, the Plough Foundation plans to work its way out of existence. The organization broke the news itself in a half page Sunday newspaper ad. And it did not bury the lead. Right up front, it stated that the Memphis based foundation has decided to grant its remaining assets to local nonprofit organizations within the next four years – and permanently close operations at the end of that process. It was a stunning announcement for a philanthropy that has meant so much to Greater Memphis. Over the years, the Plough Foundation has publicly issued more than $300 million dollars to nonprofit groups to support public education, social services, the arts, homelessness, crime prevention and various Jewish causes. That’s in addition to the huge sums of money that Abe Plough contributed himself under the guise of Mr. Anonymous. The foundation will release details about its final grant process during the coming months. In the meantime, and as non- profits prepare their final requests – all of Memphis owes a debt of gratitude to the late Abe Plough – and his amazing generosity. And that’s my point of view. I’m Otis Sanford, for Local 24 News.
