Local 24 News political analyst & commentator Otis Sanford on Memphis mayor’s race campaign contribu

LOCAL 24 NEWS IS YOUR LOCAL ELECTION HEADQUARTERS… AND WE’RE KEEPING YOU IN THE LOOP WITH THE HOTTEST RACE IN MEMPHIS THIS YEAR… AND THAT’S THE OCTOBER CONTEST FOR MEMPHIS MAYOR. TONIGHT … WE TALK MONEY. LOCAL 24 POLITICAL ANALYST … OTIS SANFORD … DIGS INTO CAMPAIGN FINANCES FOR THIS ELECTION. OTIS SANFORD/REPORTIN G: IT IS A GIVEN IN POLITICS THAT MONEY ALONE DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY MEAN VICTORY ON ELECTION DAY. BUT ENOUGH MONEY CERTAINLY HELPS THE CHANCES. SO, IT’S WORTH NOTING THAT MEMPHIS MAYOR JIM STRICKLAND IS CELEBRATING THE FACT THAT HIS REELECTION CAMPAIGN HAS TOPPED THE ONE MILLION DOLLAR MARK IN CONTRIBUTIONS. THAT’S A STAGGERING TOTAL – PARTICULARLY SINCE WE ARE STILL ABOUT THREE MONTHS FROM THE OCTOBER 3RD ELECTION. STRICKLAND TOLD THE DAILY MEMPHIAN IN A PODCAST INTERVIEW THIS WEEK THAT HE EXPECTS TO SPEND NEARLY ALL OF THAT MONEY ON WHAT HE TERMED HIS LAST POLITICAL RACE EVER. THAT MEANS MEMPHIANS CAN EXPECT TO SEE A TON OF CAMPAIGN YARD SIGNS – ALONG WITH TELEVISION, RADIO, INTERNET AND BILLBOARD ADS. WITH THAT KIND OF MONEY, STRICKLAND MIGHT EVEN PLACE A FEW NEWSPAPER ADS AS WELL. SUCH IS THE SWEET LIFE OF AN INCUMBENT CANDIDATE WHO IS FLUSH WITH MONEY. BUT NOT TO BE COMPLETELY OUTDONE, CHALLENGER TAMI SAWYER REPORTED A RELATIVELY IMPRESSIVE HAUL OF MORE THAN $64 THOUSAND DOLLARS DURING THE SECOND QUARTER OF 2019. SHE ALSO RELEASED A DETAILED POLICY STATEMENT TUESDAY -FOCUSING ON EDUCATION AND NEIGHBORHOOD NEEDS, IMMIGRATION ISSUES AND OTHER SOCIAL CONCERNS – INCLUDING INFANT MORTALITY. MEANWHILE, FORMER MAYOR WILLIE HERENTON REPORTED RAISING NEARLY $26 THOUSAND DOLLARS IN THE FIRST QUARTER. HIS SECOND QUARTER REPORT IS FORTHCOMING, SURE, THE NUMBERS ON ELECTION NIGHT ARE MORE IMPORTANT. BUT CAMPAIGN CASH CAN MAKE – ALL THE DIFFERENCE. AND THAT’S MY POINT OF VIEW. I’M OTIS SANFORD, FOR LOCAL 24 NEWS.
