Local 24 News political analyst & commentator Otis Sanford on D-Day

ONLY ON LOCAL 24 … WILL YOU SEE CLAIBORNE’S RETURN TO NORMANDY. AGAIN … THE SPECIAL SERIES … “RETURN TO NORMANDY” … AIRS TONIGHT AT 5:30 … ON A-B-C’S WORLD NEWS TONIGHT. BUT FIRST… OTIS SANFORD … SHARES HIS POINT OF VIEW ON THE HISTORIC DAY. OTIS SANFORD/REPORTIN G: TOMORROW, WHICH IS JUNE 6TH, IS NOT AN OFFICIAL FEDERAL HOLIDAY. BUT REALLY, IT SHOULD BE. BECAUSE IT’S THE ANNIVERSARY OF ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT DAYS – NOT JUST IN AMERICAN HISTORY, BUT IN WORLD HISTORY AS WELL. TOMORROW MARKS THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF D-DAY, THE DAY U.S. AND ALLIED FORCES STORMED THE BEACHES AT NORMANDY, FRANCE – LEADING TO THE LIBERATION OF WESTERN EUROPE FROM NAZI GERMANY. PUT ANOTHER WAY, HAD THE MISSION NOT BEEN SUCCESSFUL, THE WORLD WOULD BE A FAR DIFFERENT PLACE TODAY – FULLY OF TYRANNY AND A LOT LESS FREEDOM. BUT WE WERE VICTORIOUS – THANKS TO ABOUT 150 THOUSAND BRAVE ALLIED SOLDIERS – THOUSANDS OF WHOM LOST THEIR LIVES – IN THE LARGEST INVASION BY AIR, LAND A SEA IN HISTORY. SURVIVORS OF D- DAY INCLUDE 14 VETERANS FROM THE GREATER MEMPHIS AREA – WHO WILL RETURN TO NORMANDY TOMORROW TO OBSERVE THE LANDMARK ANNIVERSARY. SOME OF THEM WERE JUST TEENAGERS WHEN THEY LANDED ON THE BEACHES. THEY NOW RANGE IN AGE FROM 93 TO 102. AND THEY WILL BE TREATED QUITE DESERVEDLY LIKE ROCK STARS. THEIR TRAVEL IS SPONSORED BY FOREVER YOUNG SENIOR VETERANS, A COLLIERVILLE BASED NONPROFIT GROUP – THAT TAKEN VETERANS ON NINE TRIPS BACK TO NORMANDY FOR D- DAY OBSERVANCES. THE WORD HERO IS OFTEN OVERUSED. BUT THERE IS NO BETTER WORD TO DESCRIBE THE GALLANT SOLDIERS WHO TOOK PART IN THAT FATEFUL BATTLE. IT’S WHY THEY ARE APPROPRIATELY CALLED – THE GREATEST GENERATION. AND THAT’S MY POINT OF VIEW. I’M OTIS SANFORD, FOR LOCAL 24 NEWS.
