Japan’s foreign ministry has replaced its
top diplomat for Asian affairs at a time when bilateral ties between Seoul and Tokyo are
at their worst in recent years. Shigeki Takizaki will oversee diplomatic issues
with South and North Korea starting next Monday. He is currently in charge of the ministry’s
Southeast and Southwest Asian Affairs Department and also of the Association of Southeast Asian
Nations. He’ll replace Kenji Kanasugi , who will serve
as senior deputy foreign minister for economic affairs.
