Committee seeks solutions to low turnout at local government elections

The committee is concerned about falling turnout
in local government elections and we’re determined to drive up that turnout, not just
for everyone but for groups that are particularly underrepresented, so we’re looking to reach
out to 16 and 17 year-olds, younger groups, reach out those living in unsettled and temporary
accommodation, those that are homeless, to reach out to those living with disabilities,
black and minority ethnic groups. We want to see voter registration, we want to reach
out to communities where they feel most comfortable, and that’s not always at political meetings
and hustings. We want to make sure the Scottish Government and local authorities are playing
their part because this committee, we will play our part to motivate people to vote in
these elections to make sure they get the services they want in their communities and
that they deserve.
