Australia’s Economic and Commercial Diplomacy

Promoting Australia’s prosperity in a competitive
global economy relies now, more than ever, on trusted partnerships between our government
and our business community. Our shared wealth – upon which all national
endeavours depend – reflects Australia’s enduring embrace of international trade, openness
to foreign investment and the ingenuity of our people. It is also tied closely to the performance
and growth of Australian businesses – of all sizes – domestically, within our region,
and further abroad. When we wrote the 2017 Foreign Policy White
Paper, we heard from the business community that government could improve its support
for Australian companies seeking global opportunities, and improve the level of our ongoing, meaningful
engagement with business. In response, working closely with Austrade,
the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has recrafted its economic diplomacy agenda
to reflect an unambiguous focus on Australia’s commercial interests. This means we will continue to defend our
deeply held belief in an open global economy supported by enforceable rules. We will resist
creeping protectionism and tackle international barriers in the way of Australian exporters. It means focussing our network of 117 overseas
posts more strongly on promoting Australia’s commercial interests in foreign markets, with
better coordination across Commonwealth and state agencies. It means we’re giving real priority to regular,
strategic engagement with business in Australia and overseas. It means our overseas posts will exchange
insights with business on foreign markets and global economic conditions, tapping into
deep reservoirs of expertise among our diplomats and officials. And it means we will help, where appropriate,
Australian businesses navigate risks and identify commercial opportunities in markets where
they may not be familiar. Our reinvigorated Economic and Commercial
Diplomacy focuses on five priorities: – promoting investment – addressing non-tariff barriers to trade – supporting and facilitating business – increasing science, technology and innovation links; and – advocating for a global rules-based trade system. With creative and collaborative diplomacy,
and in close partnership with Austrade, we will promote a confident, outward-looking
Australia that engages openly with the risks and opportunities of an evolving global economy. An effective partnership between business
and government will ensure an Australia that is stronger, safer and more prosperous for
all.
